The year was 1964 and James White opened the Broken Spoke out on South Lamar in Austin, Texas, in a dirt parking lot underneath a big oak tree. One of the last of the true Texas dance halls. It has standard honky-tonk decor – rec checkered tablecloths, low ceilings, pool tables, neon lights (everywhere) and a dance floor right through the middle. Everyone comes to have a good time. Cowpokes, city clickers, hipsters, alternachicks, tourists, and techies. James White says it is all about showing people a good time in a safe, family-friendly atmosphere. “It doesn’t matter if you are a millionaire or a ditch digger, all can have a good time at the Spoke.” Just remember to wear your boots.
